Two kinds of generator
The single most useful distinction in this category is where the generator runs, because it decides what you get out.

There is also one useful outlier: NotebookLM, which generates slide decks (and audio and video overviews) from your own uploaded sources, grounded strictly in them — excellent for understanding material, though its slide export is image-based rather than editable.
The vocabulary of AI slide generators
- Prompt-to-deck / document-to-deck. Generating from a short description, or from your existing material. Document-to-deck is the more reliable of the two, because the facts are already yours.
- Generating vs editing. Almost every generator can create a new deck; very few can edit an existing one. Plus AI is the standout for editing decks you already have.
- Native output vs export. An add-in produces a native, editable file directly; a standalone generator produces something you then export, which can flatten or degrade.

How to choose among them
The deciding question is where the slides must end up. If they need to be native, editable files in PowerPoint or Google Slides, an add-in — Plus AI, SlidesAI or Microsoft Copilot — is the natural fit, because there is no lossy export. If you want a fast, distinctive deck to present or share as a link, a standalone generator like Gamma is quicker and better-looking.
