Microsoft Copilot for PowerPoint is Microsoft's AI assistant built directly into PowerPoint. It isn't a separate presentation app. If you already use PowerPoint, Copilot adds AI features to the software you're familiar with.
This is its biggest advantage. You don't have to create a presentation somewhere else and then export it to PowerPoint. Copilot can help you create and edit the presentation inside PowerPoint, so the finished file is a normal, editable .pptx file.
You can also use existing material to get started. For example, Copilot can create a presentation based on documents and other files you already have. For businesses using Microsoft 365, it can also work with information your organization has stored within Microsoft's system, depending on your account and permissions.
The main complication is access. There isn't a separate free version of Copilot for PowerPoint that you can simply sign up for. You need an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription that includes the appropriate Copilot features, and the available plans differ for individuals and businesses.

It's particularly useful for individuals and organizations that need their finished presentations to remain genuine, editable PowerPoint files. It can also be a good fit for companies that already have established PowerPoint templates, Microsoft 365 accounts and documents they want to turn into presentations.
If your company already pays for Microsoft 365 and you spend much of your time working in PowerPoint, Copilot lets you add AI without introducing another presentation platform.
Copilot is harder to justify if you don't already use Microsoft 365. You may end up paying for a larger Microsoft subscription when all you really want is an occasional AI presentation tool.
It's also still PowerPoint. If you're specifically looking for a different style of presentation, a web-based presentation experience, or a tool that handles most of the design decisions for you, a standalone AI presentation maker may suit you better.
