An AI slide generator is a tool whose core job is to turn an input — a prompt, a topic, notes or a whole document — into slides, fast. Some are standalone apps built around generation; others are add-ins that generate inside PowerPoint or Google Slides. What unites them is that generating the deck is the point, not a side feature: you give them something to work from, and a draft deck comes back in about a minute.

This page explains the two shapes a generator can take, the vocabulary to compare them by, and which tools belong here. For the wider decision, see how to choose an AI presentation tool; to get the most reliable results, see turning a document or PDF into slides with AI.

Two kinds of generator

The single most useful distinction in this category is where the generator runs, because it decides what you get out.

There is also one useful outlier: NotebookLM, which generates slide decks (and audio and video overviews) from your own uploaded sources, grounded strictly in them — excellent for understanding material, though its slide export is image-based rather than editable.

The vocabulary of AI slide generators

  • Prompt-to-deck / document-to-deck. Generating from a short description, or from your existing material. Document-to-deck is the more reliable of the two, because the facts are already yours.
  • Generating vs editing. Almost every generator can create a new deck; very few can edit an existing one. Plus AI is the standout for editing decks you already have.
  • Native output vs export. An add-in produces a native, editable file directly; a standalone generator produces something you then export, which can flatten or degrade.
  • Grounded generation. Producing content strictly from sources you supply (as NotebookLM does), rather than inventing from a prompt — the most trustworthy mode, and the one least likely to state something false.
  • Credits and quotas. How generation is metered — per credit, or per whole presentation per year. It decides how much you can generate before paying.

Microsoft Copilot Built into PowerPoint No (needs M365)

How to choose among them

The deciding question is where the slides must end up. If they need to be native, editable files in PowerPoint or Google Slides, an add-in — Plus AI, SlidesAI or Microsoft Copilot — is the natural fit, because there is no lossy export. If you want a fast, distinctive deck to present or share as a link, a standalone generator like Gamma is quicker and better-looking. If your real goal is to understand and summarise your own material, NotebookLM is unmatched and free — just remember its slides are image-based.

One more distinction worth weighing: do you mostly create new decks, or improve existing ones? Most generators only start from scratch. If editing decks you already have is a big part of your work, Plus AI is the one built for it.

Many of these tools also appear under AI PowerPoint tools (where the focus is editable .pptx specifically) and the standalone ones under AI presentation makers. Use this category when generation speed — prompt or document in, deck out — is your priority.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI slide generator? A tool that turns a prompt, notes or a document into a slide deck automatically. Some are standalone apps, some are add-ins inside PowerPoint or Google Slides, but all share the same core job: generate a draft deck from an input, fast.

What is the best AI slide generator? It depends on where the slides go. For native editable slides in PowerPoint or Google Slides, Plus AI or (with a Microsoft 365 licence) Copilot; for a free option, SlidesAI or Gamma; for research-grounded decks, NotebookLM. Our buyer's guide helps you match one to your needs.

Do AI slide generators produce editable slides? Add-ins (Plus AI, SlidesAI, Copilot) produce native, editable slides. Standalone generators export a file that may be editable (Canva-style) or lossy (Gamma). NotebookLM's slide export is image-based and not editable.

Which AI slide generator is free? SlidesAI, Gamma, Presentations.AI and NotebookLM all have genuine free plans. Plus AI is trial-only, and Copilot requires a paid Microsoft 365 licence. See best free AI presentation tools.

Will a slide generator get my facts right? Not automatically. Anything generating from a bare prompt can state things that are wrong, so always check. Generating from your own document is more reliable, and NotebookLM — which is grounded strictly in your sources — is the most cautious of the group.
